Chapter 4: In chapter four, we learn more about Gatsby's past through a series of flashbacks. We discover that he was born into a poor family in North Dakota and that he made his fortune through illegal means. Gatsby also reveals that he was in love with Daisy before she married Tom. Chapter 5: In chapter five, Gatsby finally reunites with Daisy at his own party. They are both nervous and awkward at first, but eventually, their feelings for each other are rekindled. Chapter 6: Chapter six delves further into Gatsby's past, as Nick learns more about his criminal connections and his desire to become wealthy in order to win back Daisy. We also learn that Gatsby's real name is James Gatz. Chapter 7: In chapter seven, tensions between Gatsby and Tom come to a head as Gatsby tries to win Daisy over completely. Tom becomes suspicious of Gatsby's past and confronts him at a hotel. Later, Gatsby and Daisy drive back to Long Island and accidentally hit and kill Myrtle Wilson with Gatsby's car. Chapter 8: Chapter eight is a somber chapter, as we see Gatsby struggle with the aftermath of Myrtle's death and the realization that his dream of being with Daisy may never come true. Nick also learns more about Gatsby's past and his true feelings for Daisy. Chapter 9: In the final chapter, Gatsby's funeral is held, and we see the aftermath of his tragic death. Nick reflects on the events of the summer and the disillusionment of the American Dream. The novel ends with Nick's famous line, 'So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.' |
